Grandes Astrances (Astrantia major), classics of English and priest’s gardens, very much in vogue with landscape gardeners for prairie-style gardens, are precious for their wild yet sophisticated appearance.

Yet they remain largely unknown to the amateur gardener, for whom Astrance is more akin to a (very good) Parisian restaurant.

Astrances are one of the most beautiful perennials for mid-shade: they bloom for a long time, all summer long, in magnificent pink, white or red star-shaped umbels, depending on the variety.

This sturdy mountain plant, found on forest edges and alpine meadows, often takes a year to really get going, but then produces a large clump of dozens of flowering stems continuously from June to September. It really only fears summer drought.

Astrance is very versatile in the garden.  It goes well with… almost anything, including perennials and roses. It makes beautiful country-style bouquets.

Rouge grenat is a very deep, dark shade of red to be combined with black plains and woods for a very glamorous look. It can also be used as a strong contrast with white or natural woods.

Finding the ideal location for your Herbarium will be child’s play.

At its simplest, look for strong light exposure to make the surrounding liquid glow, on dark furniture to bring out the magnificent hues of the leaves.

Sublimate your interior with soothing, natural and luminous atmospheres, for a decoration that reflects your personality.

Plant informations

Astrance is native to the mountains of Europe. It is frequently found in its natural state on forest edges, in semi-shaded meadows and in lightly shaded undergrowth.

It is sometimes found at the water’s edge when the soil is sufficiently drained; it prefers a fairly shady situation, with morning or end-of-day sun, in rich, fairly cool soil that does not dry out in summer, but which is well drained, as it does not appreciate having its feet permanently in water.

A member of the Apiaceae family, or Umbelliferae, Astrance is a cousin of carrots, Angelica and parsley, and of certain thistles such as Eryngiums, with which it shares the umbel shape of its flowers.

The flowers are generally pink or white, tinged with aniseed green or grey on certain varieties. Some varieties are reddish-purple (‘Hadspen Blood’, ‘Moulin Rouge’), and many bear crystal-clear shades of color.

Weightlessly immersed in its preservative liquid and presented in an elegant bottle, it invites you to contemplate and let go, for serenity and peace.

Decorative tips

A practical and inexpensive way to decorate your home!

Garnet color, more specifically called garnet red, is a very intense shade of red, somewhere between burgundy and amaranth.

The name of this color comes, as is easily deduced, from the coloration of the pomegranate fruit seeds. Pomegranate is a warm, enveloping color, linked to nature in particular through its connection to the fruit mentioned. The color garnet conveys passion and great energy.

Thanks to the strength and warmth this hue manages to convey, garnet red makes every room in the house welcoming and comfortable. In terms of the combinations you create, garnet is perfect for elegant, modern combinations, as well as in more traditional, contemporary and even eclectic contexts.

To avoid making a living space narrow or dark with the garnet hue, it’s a good idea to have well-lit rooms (artificial light) and bright rooms (natural light).

Garnet goes well with neutral camel, trendy navy blue, neutral grey, trendy interior design, intense brown, luminous white, energetic yellow, violet and red.

Pure, soothing, natural and innovative, these herbariums in flasks are equally at home in the kitchen, on a shelf, in the living room, in the bedroom or even in the bathroom…
